Recently a lovely couple invited me into their home to have a chat about financial planning, my chats are nothing formal and there’s certainly no sign of paperwork, it’s just a chat. For me a chat is the best way to start any client relationship. It was a great opportunity for me to discover what was important to them…so I simply listened to their their goals and dreams.
They’ve worked hard for many years and have decided it’s time to do things differently & to make their money work for them, all in the hope they can have a different life than they saw their parents live.
Their goal is to not to have to work too far into the future, they want ‘to be able to decide whether to work’ rather than ‘having to work’. They want a simple life, but they also want to be able to make choices their parents couldn’t make simply because there wasn’t enough money.
We kicked a few thoughts around and discussed the pros and cons of different things they’d been considering…even super, something they’ve both always been nervous of, but not any more…they know what it can do now!
When I arrived they were a little hesitant and unsure I’d be able to help them achieve their goals, apparently ‘a couple of guys’ had disappointed them. By contrast, as I was leaving, they were smiling and joking about how they were looking forward our next catch up and talking about what they’d do to prepare for the next financial planning meeting. They were excited by the possibilities they could see.
It made my heart sing to know they were excited. I can’t wait to see their reactions when we start really doing some financial planning!
